Long Tail Keywords

Post image for Long Tail Keywords

Long Tail Keywords, just in case for those who are still wondering, are words stringed together to create a phrase that contains your keywords. It would be more appropriate if one calls it Long Tail Keyword Phrases instead of just keywords, but somehow, people prefer to omit the word “phrase”. Why are SEO experts and MMO bloggers so obsessed with Long Tail Keywords?

The sole reason for this obsession is because it makes their job to rank for their keywords easier and it makes a lot of sense as using long tails will allow them to target your traffic more specifically. For example, if your blog is about Baking Cucumber Cakes, ranking for the words, Baking Cakes or Cake Baking is something that you should not attempt to rank for as you would be up against millions of others blogs on baking. However, adding a couple of more words to that phrase would make a lot of difference. Thus if you work on the phrase, Baking Cucumber Cakes At Home or Secret Recipes To Bake A Cucumber Cake, chances of your blog ranking at the top spot is pretty good.

Using long tails have been the bread and butter for many MMO bloggers who understands the concept. Even though they might just get a fraction of traffic, those traffic nevertheless, are tightly targeted and highly valuable should they be selling recipe books on that topic.

However, due to relative ease for ranking with long tails, many also took this route to get traffic to their blogs which are not exactly concerned with whatever long tails that they ranked for. It is something some calls Bait and Switch. That means you bait your traffic with a good search ranking for an easily ranked long tail and when those searchers comes, they are presented with post contents or information that is not exactly what they have come looking for. The motive of the blogger is for those searchers to click on the Ads or affiliate products, which in the other way round, will be related to the long tails that they are ranking.

Google decided that, in order to keep it’s reputation as the best Search Engine in the whole wide world, they have to put a stop to this abuse. In the immediate future, if you want to rank for long tails, you will have to make sure your blog is about those keywords that you are ranking for. So if you are ranking for Grandmother’s Way To Bake A Cucumber Cake, you better get your grandmother to reveal her cucumber cake recipes to you. If you be blogging about making cheese cakes instead, (because making cheese cakes is hard to rank) your blog will be eaten up by Google (no pun intended), never too see the daylights again.

Matt Cutts confirms it.

That Bloody Logo Again?

Posted: 29 May 2010 06:36 PM PDT

So those who visits regularly would have got used to my fickle mind by now. Except for that fat lady back home, I do not seem to be able to keep anything for long. When I learned that I can change my post titles to use some fancy fonts, one thing lead to another until finally even the logo that was hardly 3 months old, got changed.  And I thought I had hooked on down to something permanent. What the hell, I enjoy changing things around here. It’s my favorite hunting and experimenting ground.

Whatever.

I hope nobody takes after me though. I can afford to tweak around because I am using a framework that allows me just to change the looks of my theme entirely without touching any of the core html files. If you are not using such a framework, changing Themes every once too often is going to hurt your Search Rankings. Spiders will come across new sets of codes each time you change and all your posts will disappear from the search results or at least gets buried so deep that no one will ever find it.

I can also afford to tweak because 98% of those who drops in are first time visitors from Google so they won’t be suffering any “cultural” shock because they don’t even know my blog looks different two weeks ago. For the other 2% returning visitors, I think they know me well enough by now to even take notice of any change.

Back to the new logo and the letter G as my trademark. You might ask, what does the G stands for. To answer this question I am going to say something ala Chris Brogan who also changed to a new logo recently represented by the letter B.

Though he must have paid good money for his and yours truly did it himself for free, I loved his excuse.

So,

The Letter G

The letter G is the letter before H and after F. It represents masculinity because it looks like my protruding beer belly. It’s Girls, G-Spot, Greed, Grand, Great. Whatever. That is also the letter in the middle of my domain name. But hey, it can be abstracted. (whatever that meant)

G

And to end my justification to change. This gem of an ending statement by Mr. Brogan which I am also going to replicate.

But that's just me. It's TOTALLY okay not to like the new logo. It's mine. : )

Yes, it’s me and it’s mine. No excuse for the hat though. It just looked cool to have a hat on.

Use Fancy Custom Fonts For Your WordPress Blogs

Posted: 28 May 2010 08:11 PM PDT

Post image for Use Fancy Custom Fonts For Your WordPress Blogs

See the fancy fonts that my blog title is using? I have been trying to do this for, like ages and ages but without any luck. I have also tried many plugins that are suppose to do this but still no joy. Until now that is. It is also the latest offering from Google. You can now use custom fonts for your Wordpress Blogs usingfonts from the Google Font Directory.

Still in beta, Google Font Directory lets you embed the fonts available in their directory using the Google Font API. which makes it super easy. The directory even generates the codes for you and all yo have to do is to copy and paste the codes to your Theme’s file.

For you to use the Fonts, simply go to the Font directory, hover your mouse over the fonts you want and hit the “Click to embed….” link. On the new page, click “Get the code”. You will be given 2 lines of codes. One for you to paste into your header php file and another in your Stylesheet so you can style it even further. For newbies, you will find this <head> tag in your header php file. Paste the codes immediately or anywhere AFTER this tag.

The css codes comes with the h1 selector but you can use it anywhere you want. The h1 class is normally used for the Blog title. You can use it for your post titles like in my case (which will normally be h2) or for your sidebar titles, or even your overall contents if you like. You will just need to identify under which class the are attributed to. For example if you decide to use it for your sidebar title, the normal codes will look something like this,

sidebar h2 { #000000; font-family: Arial; font-size: 20px;} so on and so forth.

It might differ from theme to theme but the general idea is you change the font-family value to that of the font that you have chosen then play around with the color and the size after the fonts are showing. Different fonts reacts to different sizes.

The only downside is the fonts available in Google Font Directory is rather limited at present but Google being the giant that it is, you can rest assured the list will grow in future.

Have fun experimenting using your own fancy custom fonts for your blogs.

New Google Chrome Extensions for web development

Posted: 28 May 2010 11:30 AM PDT

The Chrome Developer Tools are great for debugging HTML, JavaScript and CSS in Chrome. If you're writing a webpage or even a web app for the Chrome Web Store, you can inspect elements in the DOM, debug live JavaScript, and edit CSS styles directly in the current page. Extensions can make Google Chrome an even better web development environment by providing additional features that you can easily access in your browser. To help developers like you, we created a page that features extensions for web development. We hope you'll find them useful in creating applications and sites for the web.

For example, Speed Tracer is an extension to help you identify and fix performance issues in your web applications. With Speed Tracer, you can get a better idea of where time is being spent in your application and troubleshoot problems in JavaScript parsing and execution, CSS style, and more.

Another useful extension is the Resolution Test that changes the size of the browser window, so web developers can preview websites in different screen resolutions. It also includes a list of commonly used resolutions, as well as a custom option to input your own resolution.

With the Web Developer extension, you can access additional developer tools such as validation options, page resizing and a CSS elements viewer; all from an additional button in the toolbar.

Another extension you should check out is the Chrome Editor that allows you to easily code within your browser, so you don't have to flip between your browser and code editor. You can also save a code reference locally to your computer for later use.

These are just a few of the extensions you can find in our extensions for web development page. You can also look for more in the extensions gallery.
