Instant Translation of Foreign Signs with this iphone App

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 08:53 PM PST

The future is certainly now with this interesting new iphone app developed by Quest Visual.

In a mix of image recognition technology and augmented reality, the app, Word Lens, functions by having the user point their iphone camera at a foreign language sign and having it instantly translated in video by the app on their iphone.

Watch the video here to get a first-hand look at how the app works.

The amazing thing about this app is that not only do you get instantaneous translation of text, it goes so far as to remap the text, colour, font and perspective whatever you happen to be are looking at, be it roadsigns or menus. It doesn’t really work on handwritten text, but it does work on other fonts pretty well. Although the translation isn’t perfect, it certainly can carry the point across.

Thus far, the app itself is free, while the translation feature (currently only available in English-to-Spanish and vice versa) is a paid add-on costing US$5 and it’s available now at the itunes store.

This is one of the first augmented reality software I’ve seen that actually puts practical use of the technology, and it’s available now! Imagine all the language barriers it could break when more language databases are available to the app. Now combine this with another app that could translate the spoken word and we would very well be working towards something like a universal translator, and doesn’t that sound like something straight out of a science-fiction movie?

Playable Game on Front Porch; Made Entirely of Christmas Lights

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 06:17 AM PST

Here’s something incredibly fun for the Christmas season. Maker of last year’s ‘Chiristmas Lights Hero’, Ric Turner (former Disney ‘imagineer’ and special effects specialist) is back again this year, with a brand new game on his front porch.

This year, he has come up with ‘Snowball Blaster’.

The objective is to dodge snowballs hurling towards the sleigh you are controlling. Sounds like a simple game, but it certainly makes for a really impressive light show. Even your scores are counted for each snowball you’ve dodged (though they are not logged). For those who are able to get all the way through to the end of the game, they are rewarded for with a big light show. (Though according to Turner, no one has made it yet)

View the video here to see the game in action.

The audio to the game is also broadcast through FM so that people who pass by in their cars can get a good show too.

I can’t wait to see what Turner has in store for next year. It’ll probably be as impressive as this year’s game, no doubt.

Shape-Memory Polymer: Self-Healing Plastic that Fixes Itself

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 08:10 PM PST

Sounds like something straight out of a science-fiction movie, but brace yourselves, it’s today’s reality.

This amazing new material is now being developed by the researchers in Arizona State. It is said to be self-diagnosing and self-healing, which means that it can detect the presence of damage and regenerate itself.

The material uses “shape-memory” polymers; materials that turn into a specific shape when heated to a certain temperature. View the video to see and example of how this works. The polymers are embedded with a fiber-optic network, that serves as both a sensor for damage and a heat delivery system.

The way the material works is when there is damage to the material (eg a tear or crack), an infrared laser transmits light through the fiber-optic network and delivers thermal energy to the problem spot. That triggers the shape-memory polymers, which are programmed to toughen up to 11 times. The shape-memory effect can also close up a crack or tear and regain an amazing 96% of the material's original strength! The most amazing thing is that the material can self-heal while in use!

Just think of the applications such a material could be put to, such as implantable medical devices, especially if failure of such devices may mean certain death.

Augmented Reality Enhances Candy Flavours

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 02:53 AM PST

In vein of my last article on augmented reality, here’s another technology on Augmented Reality being developed by some innovative Japanese University Students.

This time, the augmentation is not on the visual, but on your taste buds.

At SFC Open Research Forum 2010, Keio University’s Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory revealed the TagCandy, a food texture augmentation system.

How it works is just through a basic speaker system that subtly vibrates to create different textural sensations in your mouth. Just stick a lollipop into the device and suck on it, to be able to experience the different textures or ‘flavours’, such as fizzy soda, crisp sensations. This is where the augmented reality concept comes up, with some unorthodox ‘flavours’, such as fireworks and an airplane, which are flavours that don’t exist in real life.

The device took home two awards at the 2010 International Student Virtual Reality Contest. Users of the device at the say that the fizzy soda sensation is very realistic, and that the fireworks textures were fun.

Check out the presentation video of the device here.

I think this is a very interesting device. I can imagine the various uses for it, such as enhancing redily available candy flavours or applying dynamic texture to normal flavours (carbonated meat, anyone?). I’d love to try that fireworks one.

Sonos Wireless Dock Review

Post image for Sonos Wireless Dock Review

Since my last Sonos post a few months ago (see Sonos Review), I’ve really become a big Sonos advocate. I’ve been telling people about it and recommending it to anyone who asks. In fact I’ve even added a Sonos S5 to the master Bedroom. So when Sonos asked me if I wanted to review their new Wireless Dock, I was pretty excited.

The wireless dock is a dock for your iPod/iPhone/iPod Touch that allows you to connect to your Sonos music system. You plug the unit in to the wall, sync it with your Sonos system and, in less than 2 minutes, you’re ready to start playing music. The best way to use the wireless dock is to put it near your main audio system, so if one of your friends come over you can play music directly from their player throughout your house without needing to move files around. It’s really painless. The second best way is to put a  Sonos S5 in a guest room so your guests can play their own music. When you set up a wireless Sonos dock, my advice is to configure it to autoplay on the most appropriate Sonos Player.

There is one criticism I have about the wireless dock: it won’t work with an iPad. Right now I’ve got a jury rigged iPad Dock and JVC Soundstage for when I’m watching Weeds Reruns on Netflix while making dinner … err …  I mean Ted Videos … yeah, that’s the ticket … ’cause the native iPad speaker is too low. If the Sonos wireless dock had a slot that accommodated an iPad I could replace those two with one unit. Other than that, it’s a nice addition to the Sonos product line.

Disclosure: This is not a paid review; however, I was sent a Sonos Wireless Dock for review.

5 AdSense and Blogging Mistakes I have done and You Should Not Do

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 05:37 PM PST

I am not a AdSense guru who is making millions out of it. I am just like you who is struggling and experimenting with AdSense and blogging to get a better result. I though it would be nice to share some mistakes I have done initially and learnt a lesson. At least you can avoid them.

1. Choose the wrong niche

What is the best blogging niche? Wrong question. It is always effective to choose a better blogging niche as you may not able to find THE best blogging niche. But how can you really know if it is a better blogging niche.
There are list of software and online services that you can use to get an idea about a niche before you choose start blogging. Google Adword Keyword tool and Market Samurai is couple of really good keyword and niche research tools. However, that can only help you to a certain level.

Don't choose a niche that can be covered a wide area. Try to be more specific. Figure out the possible area that you can monetize your niche in future. Also, don't forget to start up with something you are good at.

2. I did not buy a domain name

This is the most stupid and silly mistake I have done initially and still I am suffering. I just start the blog for fun and continue blogging and end up in a stage where it is too late to move it to a domain name. It has already build up number of good inbound links and a reasonable Google page rank that I don't want to lose.

It is important to get the domain name for your blog and start blogging before it is too late. You never know what is going to happened with your blog. Domain name will give a good value to your blog. Remember to get a domain name as soon as you come up with a great idea for blogging. It is less that $15.

3. Why did n't I bought a server and moved to word press

This is similar to the previous point, getting a domain name. However, getting a server is bit expensive than getting the domain. Best deal I have got is from bluehost for $6.95 per month for unlimited band with and unlimited domain names. It took me a while to convince myself to get my own server and have a wordpress blog. It gives me lot of potential and flexibility to improve my blogs and take them to the next level. Blogspot is really good for a start but you should try Wordpress on your own hosting space.

4. I was looking to make money through blogging

Making money from blogging should not be a short term goal. It will be a ultimate goal but you should really concentrate on producing something really useful, crazy, cool or fun. It will give you great potential and you will not disappointed in initial stage by not making enough money through blogging. First you need to build a strong blog that people trust.

5. Target only blogging why not a good  website

Start a blogging and Applying AdSense is the easiest and most popular method. But I have noticed that blogging is not the only way to use AdSesnse effectively. Having a good static website or dynamic website (like a forum, website directory) will add more potential. This is something I missed out in the early stages but now I have started couple of new project to cover these areas.

Bonus Tip: You should not be scared to do mistakes as you will learn lot from them and it will be a great help.
You should try doing things and keep on doing it even though you might feel that it is going to fail. It helped me lot.

Bonus

How to Optimize an eCommerce Category pages

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 07:56 AM PST

Post image for How to Optimize an eCommerce Category pages

Today’s post is in response to a question that came in via email asking, “How do I optimize a department/category page with a lot of products?” This is a fairly common question, but it has some subtleties and nuances to it. I’ll try to address those issues in this post.

The first aspect is how many is “a lot?” Is it 100, 1,000, or 10,000? If you have category pages with fewer than 200 products on them, you can list them all on one page. Yes I know Google recommends no more than 100 links per page, but as long as you don’t have a crazy number of other links in the sidebar/masthead/footer, you’ll be fine (see how to silo your website, the sidebar). However, sometimes putting that many products on a page isn’t such a great user experience, so you’ll want display less by default and have a” view all” option. If you go that route you want to keep the bot away from the page with less products and on the one with all the products. You’ll need to use a combination of no following the links, the no index/follow meta tag, and the canonical tag to point to the version you want indexed. This can be tricky and there are plenty of ways to shoot yourself in the foot. Make sure you double check your configuration and have a colleague review your work.

make sure you interlink all the paginated pages, or at least as many as possible without creating a bad user experience …
Another option to consider is using Ajax. Yes, you read that right: an SEO recommended Ajax as an optimal solution. What you want to do is serve the bots a flat HTML version with 100 products, but serve then people an Ajax version with 10 or 20 products, then use Ajax to reload/shift/change the products. But wait–isn’t that cloaking? … Yes and no. If you went with a strictly technical definition, yes it is cloaking, but there’s intent to consider here as well. So detect for the flash component, and serve Ajax, JavaScript, or HTML based on its presence (see changing content based on user intent).

However, what do you do if you really do have a lot of products per category, like say 5,000 different kinds of screws or nails? Ideally, you would want to break the category into sub categories of a hopefully more manageable size, and use the solution above. But if that’s still not possible, then you will have to use a paginated solution. If you go this route, list the most important products first to ensure the search engine spiders reach them first. Second make sure you interlink all the paginated pages, or at least as many as possible without creating a bad user experience. The spiders should be able to reach pages 2, 3, 4, and so on from page 1. Search engine spiders should never have to crawl through 1 to get to 2, through 2 to get to 3, and so on.

A few final thoughts. If you want the search engines to index the department pages, you want to give them some editorial qualities like a beauty shot/photo and some editorial non linked text. If you are just serving up a page with product links and nothing else, there isn’t a lot of value for the search engines, so noindex/follow the page with robots. The closer your department pages are to your home page or to internal link hubs (see what is an internal link hub), the better. Pages that are closer to link hubs are more likely to get deeply/completely crawled. If your category pages are 3 or more levels away, it’s unlikely a bot will crawl the 4th level to reach the products.

So what are the takeaways here:

  • If possible try to show the search engine a category page with all of the products, unless there are a very large number of products
  • If there is a large number of products you will need to paginate
  • If you are forced to paginate put the most important products first
  • Interconnect all the paginated pages, don’t connect them sequentially
