Sony Commercialises World’s First 16.41 Mpx Cellphone Sensor

Ever since the creation of mobile cameraphones, there has been huge competition between makers in the megapixel war. Now with the release of this 16.41 megapixel sensor, Sony is definitely in the lead.

As of October 7th, Sony has announced the commercialisation of two new “Exmor R” back-illuminated CMOS image sensor. The sensor is said to have dramatically improved photographic performance, including significantly high sensitivity and low noise. Sonly is also launching two new lens modules equipped with the image sensors, which reportedly, also includes the smallest and thinnest modules for mobile phones.

Sony has also claimed to have solved some of the issues related to incredibly small pixel sizes by implementing a unique formation of photo diodes to achieve a sensor with high resolution, high sensitivity, and low noise.

Sampling of the new sensors will start in January 2011 at a price of ¥2,500 (about 30 USD) per or ¥12,000 (about 150 USD) when packaged with a 10.5 x 10.5 x 7.9 mm IU081F autofocus lens module that ships in March. The second, 1/3.2-inch 8.13 megapixel IMX105PQ sensor with IU105F2 lens module will be out in April for about half the price.

Personally, for taking photos, I think I’ll just stick with my DSLR camera.
