Review Box.net – Online File Storage

Box.net is an online file storage system that allows you to keep files/folders synchronized in the cloud or across different computers.

Box.net is one of those services I REALLY want to like. Unfortunately, it just never seems to work out for me. Box.net allows you to share and synchronize files with other people across the internet/cloud. For customers who upgrade to the business or enterprise level, desktop synchronization is a key feature you pick up. The thing that most excited me about the Box.net service was integration with Google Apps for domains. However what I learned after trying was that you need to have a minimum three person license, which puts you at $45 per month for the Box.net service. To be honest, the feature that most appealed to me was the seamless synchronization that occurs when you use an iPad and Google Documents as shown in the video below:

However, a full year of Box.net is going to cost $540. It’s not going to help me make $540 in extra revenue, and it’s not going to save me time that’s worth $540, so it’s not an expense I can justify. The product is great and the service works perfectly, but the minimum 3 person license just doesn’t make sense for me, so I’ve stopped using the product. If you have three or more users, however, this is absolutely something I can recommend, especially if they are iPad users. If not, I’d recommend the competing service of Dropbox (see my Dropbox.com review). There is an extra step when working with Google Documents, but IMHO it’s not a step that’s worth $540.

Review Dropbox.com – Online File Storage

Post image for Review Dropbox.com – Online File Storage

Dropbox.com is an online file storage system that allows you to keep files/folders synchronized in the cloud or across different computers.

It’s not a secret that I’m a big fan of cloud computing. Dropbox is one of the tools I use that makes working in the cloud a little easier. The concept is pretty simple: install the Dropbox software on any computer or smart phone you own, and the files/folders will be synchronized whenever those machines have access to the internet … automagically. You don’t have to remember or tell it to sync–it all happens in the background. Here are some of the ways I use it:

  • Move files around on the network without Mac/Windows issues or permission problems
  • Make sure I have a backup copy of a presentation when I’m traveling to a client or conference
  • Make sure I have access to any recent reports or other deliverables while on the road and not at my desk
  • Send clients link to deliverables to get around any email firewalls or attachment blocking
  • Transfer files to/from my iPad or iPhone that I can view anywhere
  • Work on files on my iPad remotely (see Getting Things Done on an iPad)

A basic account comes with 2GB free. You can upgrade to 50 GB for $9.99 a month or 100GB for $20 a month. Those upgrades might come in handy if you want to upload files/pictures while on vacation to make sure you don’t lose them before you get back. I’ve tried a few other online file syncing applications and have met with limited success. Windows live sync was complicated to configure and too buggy. I once had it eat my vacation pictures from Yosemite. Box.net has a lot more features but, for a single person, it’s a little too expensive  (see my Box.net review).

Dropbox is extremely easy to use and very reasonably priced. Unless you need more features, I recommend you try dropbox.com first.

Google’s WebP to Replace JPEG

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 08:26 PM PDT

Images undoubtedly make up a large percentage of data, reportedly up to 65% of the total bytes that makes up the data on the Web.

In its efforts to make the Web faster, Google has come up with a new file format, known as WebP to further compress the file size of these image files.

The reduction of file sizes should enable websites to load a whole lot faster.

Richard Rabbat, a lead production manager at Google, wrote in a blog post, “In order to gauge the effectiveness of our efforts, we randomly picked about 1,000,000 images from the web (mostly JPEGs and some PNGs and GIFs) and re-encoded them to WebP without perceptibly compromising visual quality. This resulted in an average 39% reduction in file size. We expect that developers will achieve in practice even better file size reduction with WebP when starting from an uncompressed image.”

The smaller file sizes would also make the transfer of images much faster, as well as enable storage of more images for a smaller amount of disk space.

Samples of the converted files can be viewed on this page (in a PNG container as browsers do not yet support the WebP file format)

Personally, I don’t think WebP will replace JPEG as a standard just yet. What I really want to know is why the JPEG 2000 format hasn’t received wider support.

Who’s Afraid Of The Big Gray Wolf? 1 in 7 SEOs

Posted: 10 Oct 2010 09:53 AM PDT

I’ve been promoting my advanced SEO book‘s free chapter for a while now and, since virtually the beginning, I’ve seen a remarkable trend in my data.

That trend is a roughly 14% unsubscribe rate. About 1 in 7 people who choose to get a free sample chapter go on to unsubscribe.

Aweber email stats show that 59 out of 412 eventually unsubscribed.

That’s incredibly high.

But what’s really remarkable is why it’s so high.

It’s so high because my writing is phenomenally bad!

But, based on feedback from some unsubscribers, I have another explanation. Their view is that greyhat/blackhat SEO is Just. Not. Interesting.

I think the unsubscribes are mostly or even entirely attributable to that issue.

How can I support that opinion?

Besides for the qualitative feedback I mentioned and my bloated ego, blogosphere discussion suggests that a lot of fear exists in the SEO community about grayhat and blackhat SEO.

I’ve seen people discussing their fear of the possibility that their coworkers may be engaging in grayhat/blackhat SEO, even though what was being discussed was within the realm of whitehat SEO. “Wolf!” the boy cried…

Why are they afraid to learn?

I think it’s partly due to ignorance of grayhat and blackhat SEO.

It’s like broccoli – it doesn’t smell good, so it’s scary. Just like spinach. Or my armpits. But I digress… Grayhat/blackhat SEO doesn’t have a good reputation, so it’s scary.

That’s the problem with ignorance – it’s a self-perpetuating fear. The more people are afraid of grayhat or blackhat SEO, the more they avoid learning about these topics.

The irony is that blackhat techniques and grayhat techniques often inspire whitehat adaptations.

As Rob Kerry once said, blackhat SEOs were using nofollow to sculpt PageRank years before the rest of the SEO community caught on. That, of course, went on to become a very popular topic in the field…

I’ve made a deliberate choice to keep the grayhat/blackhat material in my sample chapter.

I think it’s useful to filter out those whitehat SEOs who are afraid to even hear about grayhat or blackhat SEO. My hope is that this will eventually prevent returns and negative reviews in the blogosphere as well as helping to avoid nonverbal-yet-dissatisfied-customers.

But it’s a shame it has to be that way.

Understand: Advanced SEO means thinking creatively and critically about search.

I’m not advocating wholesale adoption of cloaking and autogenerated content and linkspam. I’m certainly not advocating cracking other people’s sites to inject links or malware.

I am advocating reading about those techniques, seeing sites using them (but maybe not visiting the malware drive-by-download sites), and understanding why and how they work. Then asking, “How do I learn from this?” and “How do I adapt it to suit my hat colour?”

You can even learn from the malware! For instance, auto-scan link prospects for vulnerabilities and use that as a hook in your link request email (or to start the relationship before the link request). Or follow the footprints of blackhats inserting malware and injecting links to find new link prospects for your ‘your-site-is-insecure’ link request hook.

By definition, if you limit your sources of inspiration, you limit your creativity.

1/7 whitehat SEOs seem to be fine with that.

Are you afraid of the big gray wolf? (Tweet “I agrees,” flames and marriage proposals @GabGoldenberg.)
