Hand-held Medical Scanner Detect Health Level

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 08:14 PM PST

It certainly sounds something straight out of Star Trek, but believe it or not, this scanner is reality. The scanner is able to detect if a patient is healthy or not just by pointing it at the skin.

Development on the scanner was carried out over a period of five years by a group lead by one professor Jürgen Lademann of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergy of the Charité-University Medicine in Berlin.

The device is being tested right now on a group of 19-year-old students. Read their report here.

How does the device work?

The device works by reflecting a beam of light off your skin and analyzing the wavelengths reflected back into the device. The information that processed is able to work out the anti-oxidant levels in your skin.

So just point the device at your skin, wait three minutes and the device will tell you how healthy you are from a scale of one to ten (worst to best).

Before the invention of this device, the only way for doctors to get the same type of readings was to get tissue samples and process them. We’ve certainly come a long way from that.

According to the researchers, the anti-oxidant level in your skin is pretty telling. It can indicate your overall body health because it is affected by stress, smoking, alcohol drinking, unhealthy food, lack of sleep and UV radiation. During the trial, they were even able to detect changes in diet and smoking habits.

One thing the scanner is not designed for is to detect any specific disease. It is only for detecting your overall health level. It will be available soon for US$280 in Europe.

It’s definitely interesting to have a device that works like a video game. Point, shoot, improve accordingly. I would certainly use one, but at its current cost I think I’ll just keep an eye on my health the old fashioned way.

Massive 3D Touchscreen

Posted: 20 Feb 2011 06:58 PM PST

Touchscreens are always fun to play with and they’re definitely a cool element to have with an interactive audience. There have been many forms that the touchscreen has taken on, even as ice, but I think this is one of the coolest (no pun intended) one yet.

The University of Groningen in the Netherlands has taken this concept much further, by converting a 3D theater into a gigantic touchscreen. This thing stands 10 meters by 2.8 meters and are able to detect up to 100 simultaneous touch inputs. It has a curvature of 135 degrees.

View the video here for a demonstration of the screen.

The screen is tracked by 6 Optitrack cameras and consists of 1000 infrared LEDs. The resolution is obviously as massive as the screen itself, boosting 4900 x 1700 pixels. The screen also has 120 Hertz stereo capability and 50 milliseconds of latency.

Imagine what you could do with one of these in your living room! Personally,  I love the concept of gesture interaction (such as the Microsoft Kinect) as well and you can see that this particular touchscreen looks like it is able to detect some form of it as well. Now if someone would size this down into an affordable living room-sized version I would definitely be interested in getting one.

RD Mute, Android App That Mutes Your Phone

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 08:04 PM PST

Well, there are obviously plenty of reasons for you to mute your phone. I do it when I’m working, sleeping, driving in my car, and at the cinema. Whatever your reasons for doing it, it’s not always ideal for you to have to pick up your phone and fiddle with the settings. I know I’m especially bad at remembering to turn the sound back on again after I’ve muted it.

RD Mute is here to help with that. It’s an Android Phone app that mutes your phone when it’s turned upside down.

Basically the app works by turning the sound off your phone when you out it face down. Flip your phone over and the sound turns back on again and you can get back to whatever you were doing.

The best thing about the app? It’s absolutely free and requires no setup to use. (Rather than having to pay US$5 for Tasker, which can do the same thing, and then some)

RD Mute also has a little extra function, and though it seems unrelated to the basic function of the app, it’s still pretty cool. The app can mute your phone while you are driving, so you don’t get distracted by any incoming calls or text messages. You can pick the speed at which you want your phone to mute itself, and even send a text to your friends so when they call you they know you are driving and that you’ll call them back soon.

The text feature only applies to the driving mode though, and that’s if you’re going at 50mph or more.

It would be great if the text feature could be integrated into the regular ‘face-down-mute’ function of the phone, say if you had your phone face down for 10 or 15 minutes it could text your friends to let them know you are unavailable.

Still, RD Mute is an awesome Android app. You can get it here from the Android Market.

Epson Launches A3+ Inkjet Printer: Ensures Saleable Medium Quality Prints

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 03:20 AM PST

Most of the time, artists, designers, photographers and the like have to rely heavily on printing companies in order to get proper saleable good-quality prints that are able to last and meet the customer’s criteria.

At the other side of the spectrum, home printers nowadays are becoming cheaper and much more affordable to the laymen. So it can be said that most people wouldn’t want to do a print run at the print shop anymore, especially if you had only wanted a decent quality print.

Epson’s newly launched the Stylus Photo R3000, an A3+ photo printer is aimed at those creative minds, who want to do a little print run of their own. The Stylus Photo R3000 is a compact little printer that looks right at home on a desktop, and its designed that way; to fit on even a minuscule desk.

Features of the printer were developed with convenience in mind, as seen with the front loading fine art paper feed that aims to make insertion easier. Also featured is the 2.5-inch colour LCD display that shows ink levels and is also for viewing instructions. Last but not least is the 25.9ml ink cartridges that allow for print runs to be completed to optimise cost per page.

Epson also claims that combining the UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta inkset will give you unbeatable grayscale reproduction that is important for both colour and black and white prints.

The Stylus Photo R3000 comes with ICC profiles to make for accurate printing and Epson says that the printer can produce a high-quality A3+ photo in just 195 seconds. It supports roll, cut-sheet fine art paper and board up to 1.3mm thick.

The Epson Stylus Photo R3000 will set you back US$849.99.

I think this is a wonderful printer and although still not the cheapest printer by far, it IS priced somewhat lower for a printer of its range. I have complained of fine art prints being too pricey before, and although that may also be from the artist trying to make a living/profit, I think if the cost of getting the prints done can be reduced, so may the price of it.
